My girlfriend’s car, a manual ‘97 Saturn SL2 just decided it no longer wanted the rotating assembly to live inside the car and tossed a rod out the back of the block. Oh, well. She has a fifth-gen manual Civic DX sedan now. Tipping the scales at 2275 lbs with a 100hp SOHC D15B7 engine it should be around as quick as my Miata, and about as tossable. It needs a rear motor mount and suspension, and I’m hoping to talk her into some track goodies for autocross duty.

Thrown rod, huh? I always figured the problem with Saturn engines would be the
rings.

Poor little Saturn. Its oil burning days have now ended.

It’s a pity. The SL2 is a great car. Peppy-ass 1.9l DOHC four-banger and a manual, in a ludicrously light chassis? Though I have no experience with fifth-gen Civics I’ve heard they are similar due to having the best power-to-weight of any Civic generation.

The opening sentence is brilliant. Thank you for that.

That’s a big-ass connecting rod.
